Delivering the 2007 Tour de France Grand Départ Managing major sporting events through a structured PPM-based approach Over the weekend of 7/8 July, Transport for London's Special Projects Team – working closely with the Tour de France organisation and various stakeholders – brought to London the opening events of the largest annual sporting spectacle in the world. Almost three years in planning, the event promoted cycling, showcased London and brought the sport of cycling to a mass audience. This seminar will explore the structured approaches used to ensure success – focusing on aspects of project governance, stakeholder management, communications and risk management. Guest Speaker Philip Ayerst – who managed the Programme team and the Tour's Race Headquarters in London – will present to the forum on his experiences and lessons learned. Philip, an architect by training, has worked in public, private and corporate sectors; since moving into project management, he seeks to ensure that good design is central to the planning of construction schemes. Philip worked on retail, cinema and housing projects before joining Transport for London to work on the Tour de France.
