Increasing Portfolio Throughput

Strategic capacity management on multi-project portfolios

The ability to identify, analyse and mitigate potential capacity bottlenecks on complex programmes is increasingly key to success. An analogy which is worthwhile exploring is that of operational production - where there is a need to identify the most ‘critical constraint’ on the assembly line and to manage production accordingly. Likewise, uncontrolled initiation of change within the programme environment leads to  backlogs at the points of strategic constraint. Aside from the theory, a real-life case study, looking at how Transport for London (TfL) developed the tools, and capability, to resource manage specialist engineers, will be explored.
