Here come the girls! Wednesday 11 February 2009
Over fifty female project managers attended an inspiring evening of networking hosted by Moorhouse Consulting and the Association of Project Management (APM) last week. Moorhouse Director Carrie Oliver was keynote speaker at the event held for the APM’s Women in Project Management Special Interest Group (SIG) titled: “Reaching the Top”, and told the audience about her ongoing journey from project management practitioner to Director at ‘Project Management Company of the Year’, Moorhouse Consulting. Canadian Carrie, whose clients have included Department for Transport, Homes and Communities Agency and United States Airforce, explained how she started out working on Wall Street in New York in her twenties, cut her teeth in project management working for the US government, and then latterly, her move to Europe and her directorship at Moorhouse. The audience enjoyed a lively question and answer session with Carrie, who puts her success down to her desire to never stop learning and continuing to seek out new challenges and inspiring colleagues to work with. Other subjects that came up included the benefits of academic training vs. real world experience, how to really ‘own’ your projects, and the lessons learned from working with clients across the world – good and bad! Women’s SIG Chair Carol Bell, who co-hosted the evening with Oliver, said the feedback received from delegates was outstanding. Carol smiled: “You know you have a hit on your hands when the wine has run out, and at 9pm people are still queuing up to ask the speaker questions! The audience found Carrie’s down to earth style and passion for her profession both interesting and enlightening.” Representatives from companies such as Network Rail, HSBC and Siemens all attended the event and one delegate commented: “It was the perfect networking evening to kick off the new year, fun and informative, and Carrie has given me some real food for thought regards my own career.”
