27 July 2007

A team of twenty management consultants braved the July elements to raise over £15,800 for charity, with a sponsored run and cycle from their offices in Westminster, London all the way to Lands End, Cornwall.

The two teams, from programme and project management firm Moorhouse Consulting, battled through rain, wind and shine via Hungerford, Taunton, and Plymouth to raise funds for Cancer Research and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSHCC).  The team smashed their fundraising target and arrived, tired, wet yet victorious, in Land’s End on Sunday morning.

Consultant David Epps, who co-managed the event for Moorhouse, said the team were thrilled with their achievement.

“At last year’s inaugural event we managed 252 miles from London to Bideford in forty hours, and we were determined to raise the bar in 2007, and raise more funds for our charities.  The weather tried its best to put us off course but we battled through to the end!  There was a fantastic team spirit and we had a lot of fun on the road.”

Divided into two teams of five pairs, each pair spent roughly eight hours on the road in action for one hour at a time, with one person cycling and the other running alongside.  Each team was supported by a crew of eight who ensured the participants were well fed and watered throughout the event.  The teams travelled through night and day, with the objective being to see how far each group could make it along the 352-mile route in the allotted time.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Team, captained by Duncan Hancox, made it to Lands End with a cool twenty-five minutes to spare!  The Cancer Research UK Team, captained by David Epps, made it an hour later…but were still delighted by their result!

Managing director Dom Moorhouse said that family and friends had spurred them on by estimating how far they could make it.

Dom said: “It was a tough physical challenge but the bikes and legs just about held up.  Our family, friends and colleagues have also ‘dug deep’ for two great causes.  It was a fantastic weekend. The sadists among the team are already planning for next years’ event!”

Matthew Forrest, Senior Fundraising Executive at GOSHCC said: “Last year Moorhouse raised almost £3500 for our charity and the money was a great boost to the redevelopment work taking place at the main hospital site.  The team have surpassed themselves this year with a massive £7,500 raised and this will go a long way to helping our charity even further.  Long may their desire to help us continue!”
