Overview

compass is our unique new PPM mentoring scheme, matching Moorhouse Consulting's award-winning PPM practitioners with individuals in our client’s organisations who are looking to improve their PPM capability in specific areas.

The Moorhouse mentor and client 'mentee' embark on a structured programme of one-to-one learning and development, usually over a six or twelve month period, that takes in core PPM and related management and leadership skills, and is tailored to the mentee's personal and professional objectives.

Objectives – what compass sets out to achieve

  • The Individual
The focus of the compass service is the individual. Within 6-12 months, pro-active participants will be demonstrably better placed to deliver effective programmes and projects as a result of enhanced PPM-focused knowledge, skills and attitudes.
  • The Organisation
Organisational capability development is the objective when compass is co-ordinated at a collective level – but never at the compromise of diluting a focus on individual relationships and confidences. Aggregate improvement is but a natural successor of multiple personal development successes.

Characteristics – the key features of the compass service

  • this is mentoring not coaching; development needs to be more than facilitated enquiry, and this relies heavily on the mentor’s PPM credibility and experience also
  • based on carefully matched mentor/mentee relationships at the individual level
  • private process – mentor feeds back to mentee only
  • clear PPM-focus; this is not intended to be a broader ‘executive/life coaching’ service
  • structured programme with a rigorous, measurable process, based on a broad modular ‘library’ of PPM knowledge areas but tailored to the mentee’s preferences
  • recommended elapsed time of 6 – 12 months

The role of mentor

The role of mentor is clearly a very important one. It requires the ability to adopt varying roles and styles, including those of coach, networker, guide and listener, and apply them according to the stage of development of the mentor- mentee relationship, and the situation being addressed.

Of course, the mentor must also be able to bring a great depth of PPM experience to bear on the relationship and be in a position to bring other contacts and influences into the learning environment. Therefore, not everyone can be a mentor. Moorhouse Consulting takes the selection of our mentors very seriously, and only a proportion of Moorhouse consultants are considered to be suitable for the role.

Our mentors are:

  • from ‘Big Firm’ consultancy backgrounds
  • members of PPM professional organisations, for example PMI, APM
  • accredited to related PPM standards, for example PRINCE 2, MSP, PMI PMP, APM
  • passionate about mentoring, with a combination of experience and ‘interpersonal intelligence’
  • trained by our own in-house accredited coaches
  • carefully matched to mentees contingent on a number of dimensions - seniority, sector/technical experience, personality, fit etc.
