You believe you have created a sound business case to justify launching your programme or project and implementation is now well under way. You realise, however, that there is still huge uncertainty about the benefits that will actually arise from your endeavours and many in your organisation are beginning to question whether the investment will actually meet its promise. Furthermore, you cannot see any way of demonstrating what benefits will be realised or when this will happen to those who are challenging you.

Our benefits management framework is built around five key areas:

  • Ensuring that the high-level benefits described in the business case are developed into the detail necessary to provide clear alignment between project outputs, programme outcomes, and benefits to be realised by each business area in order to achieve the programme blueprint and the strategic objectives of the organisation.
  • Appointing a business change manager at a senior level to own the overall process of benefits realisation and to develop and manage the benefits realisation schedule.
  • Ensuring that benefits are identified, defined clearly using benefits profiles, and owned by individuals spread widely across the business who will champion the
    necessary business change.
  • Establishing measures of benefit with realistic boundaries of scope and value, so that ‘before’ and ‘after’ states can be assessed, tracked and recorded to indicate whether improvement has been achieved or not.
  • Ensuring that business units are committed to the identified benefits and their realisation by encouraging ownership and responsibility for ‘adding value’ through the realisation process.

How we would work with you

We firmly believe that all aspects of benefits management must be owned by the business. Our approach is therefore normally focused on helping the business change manager and the network of change champions engage with the rest of the organisation to realise the full benefits of their investment. We have
extensive experience of defining individual benefits in a way that optimises the chances of them being realised and work alongside benefits owners to assist them in applying them to their own areas of the business. We also work closely with the business change manager to help create a detailed benefits realisation schedule that can be used to quantify the return on investment over time.

Tools & training we can provide

To support benefits management we can provide templates and examples of benefits profiles (by which each individual benefit is defined in detail), benefits  realisation schedules, and programme level benefits logs.

Because of our belief that benefits realisation must be embraced by people in our clients’ organisations, all our work is directed towards assisting with defining the job descriptions for these key programme staff and helping them in their roles. Our approaches vary from coaching and mentoring at more senior levels to training and subsequent guidance amongst change champions.
