Culture Change

Your Anxiety

Your staff team is tasked with delivering the strategy whilst they may be overloaded with a steady stream of new initiatives. Competing priorities are challenging and, when time is short or there are financial constraints, the right behaviours and attitudes may not always be demonstrated by all. There may be a number of reasons for this difficulty:

  • Re-structuring and the legacy of poor implementations and integrations
  • No obvious role models to demonstrate desired behaviours
  • Lack of focus on or clarity of culture, attitudes and behaviours.

How we can help you

We define culture as “the way things are done around here” and “what makes this organisation different from its competitors”. We believe there will often be cultural differences between teams. Interactions between ‘sub-cultures’ can enhance the ability to deliver strategy but, more often, are actually harmful. Whether you are looking to implement a culture change project for its own sake, or as part of a wider change initiative, we follow a series of steps designed specifically to unite and align your people around a winning culture:

  • Analyse your culture: look at demonstrated behaviours (e.g. the visible indicators), espoused values (corporate standards) and assumptions
  • Listen to your people: we engage with your people to define clearly what the desired culture should be today, and could be tomorrow
  • Design interventions: a co-ordinated series of events, discussions and implementations, to begin to embed a high performing culture
  • Bring your people together: discuss cultural issues regularly, and encourage people to take ownership of culture and become leaders
  • Monitor and evaluate: establish formal and informal mechanisms to assess and understand progress e.g. surveys, culture champions
  • Create a foundation to build upon: embed this activity so that it becomes business as usual.

How we would work with you

Change can be difficult for individuals and organisations alike, often bringing with it a number of fears and concerns. Working collaboratively with people who have experience in this field provides reassurance – we can signpost what is expected during the journey, and plan on the basis of our experience. We provide focused support to kick-start cultural initiatives, but work with you to ensure you are able to influence directly and shape the outcomes.

We only consider ourselves successful when your people own this activity and it becomes accepted practice.

Tools and training we can provide

We modify a standard toolkit to suit your specific requirements. It comprises a cultural assessment, a survey and a cultural change map. With your help we will identify a number of change champions, and deliver ‘train the trainer’ activity as a continuous thread of the project, so that your people can ensure continuity and the longevity of the initiative.

How this could deliver value for you

Benefits attributable to a long term focus on culture include:

  • Enhanced communication between teams
  • Improved retention of high calibre teams
  • Greater productivity through prioritisation
  • An enhanced success rate amongst broader change programmes because changed culture improves the chances of genuine benefits realisation.
