You realise that you need to improve the way you plan and do things, but recognise that you have no structured approach to planning and delivery, or any means of telling how well you are doing whilst delivery is in progress. Management decisions are not made on the basis of any formal management information, so you are unable to make the right decision, at the right time, to ensure your plans actually deliver to target.

How we can help you

Our performance management framework is built around a simple Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle. It provides a hierarchy of plans, centred on SMART objectives, to specify what is to be delivered at each level of management. These are coupled with clear means of monitoring and reporting performance to allow decisions
to be made in a timely manner. This ensures necessary corrective management action can be taken to ensure planned targets are achieved. The framework has the following features:

  • Delivery management is delegated to the lowest sensible level, allowing senior managers to focus on key issues rather than struggle with detail.
  • Objectives are cascaded ‘top down’, but reconciled ‘bottom up’ to ensure planning realism and in order to actively manage inter-dependencies.
  • The ‘Golden Thread’ linking organisational strategic objectives to individual performance objectives is established.
  • Monitoring and reporting processes and ools are designed in from the out-set.
  • Proactive management is encouraged.

How we would work with you

We typically work in small numbers in joint client teams to implement a performance management programme, normally coinciding with the annual planning and delivery cycle. It is designed to create not just the tangible elements of strong performance management (plans, objectives, performance dashboards, processes etc), but also the cultural aspects (objective-led rather than budget-constrained management, accountability and responsibility, systematic monitoring and direction etc). We work closely with managers at all levels to promote the necessary behavioural changes required to operate in a performanceorientated environment, using change techniques to ensure that a framework tailored to client-specific needs is properly embedded.

Tools & training we can provide

Our programme support is normally supplemented by training and coaching for change agents drawn from across the business, for the managers who will own and
implement the new ways of working, and for the team or department that will act as the enduring focus for performance management once the programme has closed. Supporting tools range from simple spreadsheet-based monitoring dashboards to web-hosted, multilayer, balanced scorecards.
