Developing the Crossrail sustainability strategy
- OverviewRead more
The Crossrail programme will deliver a world-class, affordable railway for London and the South-East by 2018. A key requirement is that it supports the Department of Transport and London Mayor's sustainability strategy. Moorhouse was engaged to collaboratively build the Sustainability strategy with the Head of Planning and Environment, for the Programme Director. We split the assignment into three key stages: data gathering, framework development and gap analysis and planning. The completion of all three stages resulted in the Sustainability Strategy describing Crossrail's vision and guiding principles, priority areas for sustainability, critical success factors, and a proposed sustainability management framework to direct the sustainability performance of the delivery of Crossrail. We delivered awareness, clarity and definition of the sustainability requirements and embedded greater cross-functional understanding of the significant sustainability activity already underway. Additionally we delivered new governance of the ongoing sustainability activity. All together this increased the likelihood of delivering sustainable railway.

The assignment was split into three key stages: data gathering, framework development, and gap analysis and planning. The first stage involved discussing the members of the Crossrail Executive Committee's perspectives on the sustainability challenge and identifing sustainability activity. Considerable research into external best practice was undertaken. A clear high level framework of the sustainability arena was built and used to capture and organise activity .
The final stage undertook a gap analysis and created a roadmap that will deliver the sustainability objectives. It developed appropriate governance and reporting mechanisms.
The results of these three stages were brought together in the draft Sustainability Strategy covering:
- Shared understanding of sustainable development.
- Vision of what Crossrail is seeking to achieve and the guiding principles.
- Priority areas; and an overview of the portfolio of activity. Critical success factors to achieve the sustainability goals.
- Proposed sustainability management framework to oversee, monitor and direct the sustainability performance of the delviery of Crossrail.
