Equipping senior PPM practitioners for more effective delivery at BT
- OverviewRead more
BT identified a need to develop the capability of its experienced project and programme managers. Moorhouse led the design, development and pilot implementation of a training course called Effective Project and Programme Management (EPPM). It was a bespoke blended learning and development course made up of EPPM Distance Learning and an EPPM Event. In order to support the delivery of the course by BT's own PPM practitioners, Moorhouse arranged 'Train the Trainer' sessions where facilitators were trained on optimal ways to deliver and interact with delegates. Feedback from the three pilots was overwhelmingly positive and it was evident that the EPPM course re-invigorated delegates and increased the sense of belonging to a professional community. The course is being rolled out to the c.1900 senior PPM practitioners in BT. This will support the enhancement of the performance and reputation of BT's programme and project management capability as a whole.

In order to contribute towards improving its ability to successfully deliver complex and business critical transformation and delivery programmes, BT identified a need to develop the capability of its experienced project and programme managers. It was evident from internal reviews that there was an inconsistent understanding and application of the BT Project and Programme Management (PPM) Method which in turn led to:
- delays, as new team members had to undertake varying induction processes into new programmes and projects;
- increased costs through duplication of processes and approaches; and
- lower transferability of resources across programmes and projects than is optimal
BT wanted a PPM training course that addressed the needs of experienced programme managers, project managers and project control managers, that engendered a consistent method and use of tools, and that could be delivered in an efficient and effective manner.

Moorhouse led the design, development and pilot implementation of a training course called Effective Project and Programme Management (EPPM). It was a bespoke blended learning and development course made up of two components:
- EPPM Distance Learning: a suite of computer based training modules underpinned by the BT PPM Method with a focus on reinforcing good practice in key areas of PPM.
- EPPM Event: an off-site event, that included networking and capability development activities at which delegates met with fellow PPM practitioners from across the BT Group. This enabled them to share their experiences and expertise through both team-based challenges and targeted PPM improvement discussions.
In order to support the delivery of the course by BT's own PPM practitioners, Moorhouse arranged 'Train the Trainer' sessions where facilitators were trained on optimal ways to deliver and interact with delegates. Moorhouse also ensured that on-going support and administration requirements were developed and transitioned to BT.

Moorhouse designed and developed the end to end course before conducting three highly successful pilots to a senior PPM practitioner audience from across BT. Feedback from the pilots was overwhelmingly positive and included the following comments: “The case study was extremely well thought out and engaging. The best example of a case study I've seen” and “Computer Based Training was excellent. Case study and group work helped embed it”.
From these pilot courses, it was evident that the EPPM course re-invigorated delegates and increased the sense of belonging to a professional community. For the first time, the delegates, many who worked in virtual project environments, understood what support was available to them and the wider network they were part of. The course is being rolled out to the c.1900 senior PPM practitioners in BT. This will support the enhancement of the performance and reputation of BT's programme and project management capability as a whole.
