  • Overview

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is expanding their Fast-Moving Consumer Healthcare (FMCH) business with a view to becoming an industry-leading FMCH organisation in the near-term. For GSK to deliver on this aspiration it is crucial that they have a world-class Innovation and New Product Development (NPD) process that is lean, efficient and enables reduced cycle times. A critical component in this regard is the enhancement of the existing NPD Stage Gate Framework. Moorhouse were engaged to support the design of improvements to GSK Consumer Healthcare's NPD Stage Gate Framework, to enable more effective governance of projects in the Innovation pipeline. The Moorhouse approach encompassed three stages: discovery, product development, and planning. Once implemented, the Stage Gate framework will deliver improved speed to market, more appropriate levels of control of delivery risk and an improved return on innovation investment.

The imminent expiry of blockbuster patents (i.e. 'the patent cliff') is arguably the single largest issue facing the 'Big Pharma' firms today.  In response to this industry-wide threat, one of the key strategies being employed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is the expansion of their Fast-Moving Consumer Healthcare (FMCH) business with a view to becoming an industry-leading FMCH organisation in the near-term. For GSK to deliver on this aspiration it is crucial that they have a world-class Innovation and New Product Development (NPD) process that is lean, efficient and enables reduced cycle times. A critical component in this regard is the enhancement of the existing NPD Stage Gate Framework to ensure that Consumer Healthcare Innovation projects are returning the biggest 'bang for buck'.

Moorhouse were engaged to support the design of improvements to GSK Consumer Healthcare's NPD Stage Gate Framework, to enable more effective governance of projects in the Innovation pipeline.
The Moorhouse approach encompassed three stages:

Discovery - included both top-down and bottom-up analysis of existing NPD Stage Gate Framework components. Top-down analysis involved a desk-based review of existing stage gate framework documentation including governance and key deliverables. The bottom-up analysis involved discovery interviews with stakeholders across Consumer Healthcare to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the current approach and to identify key areas for attention in the produce development stage.

Product Development – a working group comprising key stakeholders from multiple business functions implemented an agile approach to development of the stage gate approach. The team developed 2-3 iterations of potential approaches which were refined at appropriate times through facilitated design / review workshops. This stage incorporated the development of: two variants of the Stage Gate Framework (High complexity / Low Complexity), a working prototype of a project categorisation tool and guidance documentation for effective governance.

Planning – the Moorhouse team worked in conjunction with key stakeholders in GSK Consumer Healthcare's Global Strategic Projects to develop an implementation roadmap for the improved Stage Gate framework, aimed at ensuring a seamless transition of ownership of the Stage Gate framework, maximising stakeholder understanding, buy-in and commitment to the application of the framework.

    • Rapid improvements to the design of the Stage Gate Framework using an approach that significantly increased the likelihood of stakeholder commitment across the organisation, strengthening the position of the team responsible for implementation. This was made possible through the use of 'tried and tested' Moorhouse Stage Gate frameworks as foundations for design.
    • Enabled mature dialogue, improved cross-functional collaboration and team working.
    • Identified and articulated a number of 'quick-wins' to support effective implementation.
    • Once implemented, the Stage Gate framework will deliver improved speed to market, more appropriate levels of control of delivery risk and an improved return on innovation investment.
