Public services
- In perspectiveRead more
The UK public sector is experiencing unprecedented challenges, with no area remaining untouched. There is an imperative to deliver public services in innovative ways, and at radically less cost.
There is a willingness to experiment, take risks, and do things differently. Not all that the government has tried has paid off, and some proposals for reform have been altered. The listening exercise around NHS reform, for example, has shown that government is responsive to feedback, but is not altering the key thrusts of its agenda. The recent Open Public Services White Paper demonstrates that momentum behind the Big Society remains, even if proposals for implementation require more work.
So what is needed to transform public services? Clarity of purpose, strategy and direction. Comprehensive, agreed plans. Frequent communications. Willingness to bring people along, and to stay the course. A laser-like focus on delivery.
