GSK x Save the Children partnership: Skills-based volunteering pro-bono initiative

Access & Sustainability, Life Sciences, People & Change

For over 10 years, the GSK x Save the Children (StC) strategic partnership has gone beyond traditional charity fundraising to deliver sustained impact. It aims to combine the expertise of both organisations to deliver ambitious programmes to reach the most vulnerable children with life-saving interventions.

What was the challenge?

In 2023, a new 5-year phase of the partnership was announced, and an important element for the new phase was to further enhance the “Power of the Partnership” through identifying skills-based volunteering opportunities for GSK employees, driving new employee engagement, and facilitating an effective skills exchange with StC.

How did we help?

Over 9-weeks, Moorhouse provided pro-bono support working in collaboration with the GSK x StC Partnership Team to:

  • Carry out stakeholder engagement and a desktop material review to develop a discovery report, summarising the ‘As-Is’ volunteering situation, current challenges and opportunities for improvement
  • Develop an end-to-end volunteering journey, identifying the key stakeholders, activities and enablers required to successfully deliver skills-based volunteering roles
  • Create a skills matrix, informed via a survey of the GSK Global Health Business Unit, outlining the different sources and types of volunteering roles, and the skills, expertise and experience available across GSK
  • Draft a volunteer manager support guide, showcasing the GSK x StC partnership for StC Mangers to drive identification of new volunteering opportunities
  • Develop a final report with recommendations and proposed next steps designed to:
    • Deliver an effective partnership volunteering campaign
    • Mobilise volunteer support for the new immunisation incubator initiative
    • Embed the newly defined journey and enablers to maximise the opportunity of skills-based volunteering

What was the impact?

Through the pro-bono engagement, we delivered the following benefits for the GSK x StC partnership team:

  • Equipped the Partnership Team with tools and materials to support the volunteering initiative and increase effective skills exchange
  • Increased understanding of the end-to-end volunteering journey, helping to fulfil volunteering roles
  • Identified enablers required to execute volunteering opportunities, helping to maximise the volume of GSK volunteering hours provided to StC
  • Heightened awareness of the skills, expertise and experience across GSK that can be utilised by StC
  • Increased awareness and desire in GSK’s Global Health team to engage in skills-based volunteering
