Black History Month: Zuby reflects on his experience of Black Health and Wellness

This year, the theme for Black History Month is “Time for Change: Action Not Words”. At Moorhouse, it’s time for action not just words in relation to Black Health and Wellness. As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we asked some of our colleagues what this means to them, and how they look after their own health and wellness.

First off, we spoke to Zuby Okemefuna, Client Director in our Life Sciences team.

Zuby, what does health and wellness mean to you?

That I: wake up in the morning more rested than when I went to bed; start each day on a positive note; and can revisit times and places where I’ve not had the best experience without focusing on the negative. It also means I am taking care of my physical wellbeing by eating, acting and staying healthy; and I have healthy relationships and support networks around me.

How do you take care of your health and wellness?

I do these 3 things:

  1. Conduct a regular evaluation of what’s going on in and around me, paying particular attention to changes, e.g. what is new or different from last time, and should I be issuing myself any “health warnings”?
  2. Make time to experience what is important for my wellbeing, whatever that is – a walk, a song, a prayer; or sleep.
  3. Ensure I have a comfortable relationship with the word “No”.

What is your top tip to others?

Be proactive in managing your wellbeing – don’t wait until you fall off a cliff. Your definition of success should be that you don’t fall off, not that you survive the experience.

Which black British person has inspired you?

I’ve been inspired by Sir Lewis Hamilton, mainly over the last few years because:

  1. He has shown resilience in dealing with adversity; particularly when he lost a world championship under highly contentious circumstances.
  2. He has evolved and matured in the public eye while learning to stand up for what he believes in.
  3. He’s rather good at what he does.

Thank you to Zuby for sharing your personal experience. Next week we will hear from other colleagues on their experience of Black Health and Wellness.
